Iranian liberal students and graduates, a political student association in Iran, issued a statement in support of the syrian protesters against Bashar Assad’s regime, and asked for urgent “humanitarian intervention” by the international community to end “displacement, torture, massacre, and crimes against humanity in Syria”.
The following is the full text of this statement:
Tens of thousands of refugees, thousands of political prisoners, cities being bombed and people who still resist; That is the image being broadcasted by the Syrian revolution to the world. Latest news from Syria report of over a 100 killed, including many children. The tragedy has befallen. Over 13000 killed in sixteen months of Syrian nation’s resistance which has met a silent and passive reaction from the international community.
This is while the Syrian government has turned Kofi Anan’s peace proposal as “the only plan available” into an opportunity for mass murder of Syrians, and has used the army against the same citizens that it is supposed to protect while “Shabiheh” militias are freely brutalizing people.
It’s due to the silence of international community that today, less than two weeks after the massacre of Houla, which undoubtedly is one of the most horrendous cases of crime against humanity, the Assad regime dares to repeat such crime in al-Qabeer.
The urgent situation in Syria, morally binds any individual or group to do whatever in their power to stop this bloodbath; but the Islamic Republic government’s support of Bashar Assad’s murderous regime stains the reputation of Iran and Iranians; therefore it increases the responsibility of Iranian opposition to ask for an immediate humanitarian intervention of international community to end the massacre of innocent people in Syria.
The Iranian Liberal students and graduates ask from all Iranians who fight for democracy to stand alongside Syrian people, who have asked over and over for the help of international community. We urge you to ask for an urgent humanitarian intervention in Syria and do whatever in your power to this end; to remove the Assad regime so that we may finally see the end of displacement, torture, massacre, and crimes against humanity in Syria.
We hope that, with the fall of Bashar Assad and under supervision of international community on the transition to democracy and maintaining the integrity of Syria, there could be a government based on democracy and human rights in Syria. A government that would be neutral to all groups, ethnicity, and beliefs in the country.
